There are not at the moment any Australian laws that require a workplace to have a defibrillator. however there is an increasing need for businesses to protect their staff and customers while they are on site.
Providing adequate health and safety provisions is essential to help organisations save lives and ensure that duty of care levels are achieved. It has been proved that having an access to a defibrillator can save a persons life if they have a cardiac arrest outside of a hospital.
Local health professionals and the department of health recommend that defibirillators should be widely available in workplace and public areas including:
- Schools and universities.
- Shopping Centres
- Sports Centres, Gyms, Sporting Clubs, Surf Clubs
- Bus and Train Stations
- Mine sites
- Areas of heavy industry
- Construction sites
- Medical and dental reception areas
- Community areas
- Local community centres
- Libraries
- Large office buildings
- Hotels, Restaurants and Entertainment Centres
- Events and high volume foot traffic areas.
- Strata and apartment complexes
- Warehouses and retail outlets
