General public knowledge of defibrillators has often been gained from watching Hollywood films and TV shows. This media representation has not really provided people with the correct information about how to use defibrillators and the importance of having them in public places. There is a fear that providing treatment could result in hurting a patient or injuring themselves. This is not true!

1. NOT TRUE - You require medical training to use a defibrillator.

The LifePak defibrillator systems that are now on the market are extremely easy to use. You just connect the pads where shown and start the machine and follow the voice prompts. Anyone who has access to a machine can use it to save a life.

2. NOT TRUE - You may hurt the patient if you use a AED on them.

This is not true. Once a defibrillator has been attached the machine will only provide the correct shock required to the patient.

3. NOT TRUE - If you use a defibrillator on a casualty you may get a shock to yourself.

This is not true. An AED defibrillator is designed to only shock a person who does not have a normal rhythm heart. The machine will not shock someone whose heart is at a normal rate.

4. NOT TRUE - You will have time to wait for Ambulance services.

Emergency team will not often reach the patient in time. Once a person has suffered a cardiac arrest it is important to move quickly. Having an AED nearby could save a persons life. The chances of survival of cardiac arrest will increase from 6% to 74% if a defibrillator (AED) is performed within 3 to 5 minutes

5. NOT TRUE - We don’t need a Defibrillator here.

Many people of all ages can suffer from a cardiac arrest. It is often only when someone has had a heart attack that people consider getting a AED machine. We believe that every space where people gather to work or play should have access to a defibrillator. This could help save a life. We are asking for peoples help to educate workplaces, sports clubs and councils to ask for a defibrillator. Please use the form on our website to recommend an organisation and become a heart hero.
